Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party, is a representaion not only of many women throughout history, but also a display of woman's struggle in a male-dominated world. It is a piece of feminist art and is comprised of a triangular table set for 39 famous women in history. The Dinner Party, to this day, raises issues about feminism, art and female representaion.
The triangular table has 39 hand-painted china plates, napkins and goblets. Queens, mythological goddesses, writers, priestesses and other important women are commemorated in the piece, a total of 1,038 honored altogether. What is so shocking about the work of art, however, is that on each dinner plate is a butterfly-like depiction of the historical women's vulvas. This display of female genitalia sparked controversy not only among fellow artists, but among feminists themselves. Some believedthat representing women by thier genitals was simply for shock value and reduced women to only thier reproductive organs.
The Dinner Party is a memorial of all dominant women in the world, not just the names on the place settings. In mainstream America, to this day, people continue to have a patriarchal obsession. Men of history are seen as heroes while the women are simply forgotten. Chicago's art was to show people that in reality and mythology, there were heoes that were not men but deserve our respect just as well.
Chicago's work creating The Dinner Party required the labor of 200 artisans. It was meant to be so controversial that it would never be forgotten from art histroy. It is on exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The Dinner Party is an important icon of 1970s feminist art and will hopefully stay that way forever. |
