Wicca: the Basics

Here is a little article I wrote for an online mag, hope you like it. C2010 by Alura

Greetings! Since so many people here are asking me about Wicca, I thought I'd write up an article to answer some of the basics.

Allow me to dispell some of the myths that hold no footing in Wicca. First of all, there is NO devil in the craft. Wicca is an Earth based tradition. The "devil" is a Christian-Judeo enitity. Most religions need the polarity of good and evil. As a personal belief, something only holds power if you believe in it-whether good or bad...Wiccans do not believe in or worship devils. And just fyi there are no satanic witches either although some people claim to be, they are sorely misguided.

Which brings me to point number 2. There is no such thing as a "WARLOCK". If you are Wiccan, then you are a witch, whether male or female. The word warlock means "oathbreaker" or "deciever". Although it is considered that a wizard may be a warlock, witches are not. Sadly enough the dictionary is incorrect and people are trying to get that fixed. Just as a witch was once categorized as an "ugly old hag", it now refers to a practitioner of Wicca...amongst other things. Most Wiccans consider the word Warlock as derogitory.

We DO not hurt or kill any beings in our ritual. I cannot stress how IMPORTANT this is. In the craft, you tenets include "Harm None, Do What ye Will". Very important statement. Harm none is not just a rule or law but a way of life. A method of thinking. No true Wiccan would ever take the life of an animal or sentient being ever. Thats it and thats all.

Now there are many other things I can talk about for what we don't do but I'd like to move foward...to what we do like to do. Our basic "laws", "rules", "tenets", or what ever you wish to call them. I call them my life path.

Bide the Wiccan law ye must
In perfect love and perfect trust...

and merry ye meet and merry ye part.

Now regardless of which path of Wiccan you follow the basics are the same. There are many paths to consider when becoming Wiccan. But, all paths lead to the same garden.

So you have choices. There is Avalonian Wicca for those who follow the stories of King Arthur, more importantly Nimue and Merlin. There is Celtic Wicca for those who want to follow the mythologies of Ireland/Scotland. There is Fairy Wicca for any who believe in the Wee Folk! Garnerian Wicca, founded by Gerald Gardner, based on Goddess worship. There are Kabbalistic witches...dare I say Jewish Witches. We have Herbal Witches, who spend a great amount of time tending to gardens and Kitchens witches too. You can study Shadow Craft, a darker path but not evil or negative. Green Witchcraft for those who are also environmentally concerned, very similar to Herbal witches. And so many more!

One thing is certain, regardless which path you follow you are a witch! All witches are pagan but not all pagans are witches.

You have the choice to be in a coven or solitary or alittle of both like I do. Sometimes group ritual is great, especially for Samhain, Yule or Beltane.

Speaking of which, here is a quick run down of the wheel of the year...ever turning, always changing yet always the same. Yule (December), Imbolc (February), Ostara (March), Beltane (May), Litha (June), Lugnasahd (August), Mabon (September), Samhain (October.) All of these holidays that have existed for centuries have been "borrowed" by other religions.

So this is just a basic article. Next one will be more in depth. Thanks for reading!
