Working with a Familiar

Let me start off by saying that I live with five cats first of all. Sharing your space with a cat doesn't mean that he or she would want to be a familiar. Of the five cats, I have one who I do rituals and magickal workings with. She is a stereotypical black cat with yellow eyes but has a large personality that makes you wonder if Bast resides in her small body. She joined our family when we moved into our first home when we found her and another kitten under my back porch. She immediately started purring in my arms when I picked her up and we have been friends ever since. She understands human speech very well, and has been known to nod or wink in response. About a month ago, I set up an altar for the Egyptian cat goddess Bast in my bedroom. When I let the candles she hopped up on my lap, and purred while I meditated. She has sat on the table watching me as I read tarot or oracle cards, and sticks close by during ritual. From this experience, I have learned that a familiar is a magickal companion who works with you, and that a familiar has to choose for itself if this is the path it wants. She is also my physical companion when I have been physically ill by sitting or lying on my bed. During tough times, she is close by me as a friend. Our other 4 cats do stay close by when one of us is ill or going through a tough time. Animals are very intuitive and can teach us a great deal about living.
