The music was echoing through the halls, creating a mood that seemed to live and breathe within the building’s walls. The night was into its darkest hour, just before the sun began to shed its light on the earth. It was his favorite time of day, everything would seem blue to him.
The notes he played on the piano were rich and full, they rolled down the stone steps, and leapt out the windows and swirled onto the wet grass outside. He could feel the music humming in his chest and it moved his hands as if they were not a part of his body at all. He closed his eyes and let himself get lost in the moment, his favorite moment. He loved playing music just before the world woke up, just before it came alive. He let the sound flow around the room and become louder and more passionate as he continued his song.
Then suddenly, he heard a creak. His hands hovered over the keys, they remained still. Although his back was to the door, he did not turn around. He waited, remaining still and straining his ears to hear more.
“Relax my dear, it’s just me,” the voice was old and coarse. He nodded in response and began playing again. This time a quieter and softer song that simply hovered around the room lightly, it did not escape the four walls that confined him. It was just quiet enough to allow the sound of the voice to be heard. He could feel the footsteps coming closer, and he felt her stand close behind him.
“Your songs are getting very beautiful.”
He nodded his head again, opting not to speak. His fingers continued to move across the keys effortlessly.
He saw her hands reach out and hit the keys, adding to his song.
His fingers missed and hit the wrong notes. They were wrong, all wrong.
He slammed the lid to the keys shut, barely allowing her old hands to move out of the way. He struggled to keep his anger in as the silence pushed his final notes far to the corners of the room and out of existence. He did not like others working on his music.
His hands began to shake with the need to form the fast, angry music that kept filling his head as the two sat in silence.
“That was my mistake my dear, it will not happen again. When I leave, you of course may continue.”
He nodded again, still not wanting to speak.
“You just keep working on them, the songs are important my darling. More than you know,” she stood and began to head towards the heavy oak door behind him.
“Cook will bring your breakfast in the late morning, since you are up so late.”
He heard her pull on the door, the sound of it grinding on the stone floor hurt his ears.
“Do not be late tomorrow. She saw it, she says it’s going to happen soon.”
He whirled around to look at the door, suddenly alert.
She smiled and slid past the door, the last thing he saw was her long nails on her fingers adorned with gold rings.
He stared at the door for a long while. The stillness covered the room like a thick blanket.
It wasn’t until he could hear the world slowly waking up that he turned to face the piano, and began filling the morning with sound. |
