Locked in a Broom Closet (Testimony part 2) |

In senior year, my World Humanities teacher decided that, prior to reading literature from all over the world, we would learn a bit about the world religions. There were of course the major religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, but there was also Primal Indigenous (i.e. whatever minor religion you want to study). Guess what I chose?
With a rubric in hand, I checked out a huge stack of books, not fearing what my parents would think. After all, it was an assignment. Let me just say, I wasn’t wrong. My parents were happy that I was learning about another religion. They actually believe that you should be aware of other religions and cultures.
But the fact of the matter is: I’m still locked in the broom closet, so to speak. I know my faith. I know why I believe it and why I want to practice. After all the disappointments my family has experienced (I’m sort of the good child); I don’t feel that I can even hint at it. The situation is always really wrong, as in brother-gets-hit-by-a-car-what-is-so-important-it-can’t-wait sort of bad.
I’m keeping an essential part of me a secret. When I stand amongst my church friends – men and women who are so close they’re my brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts – I feel guilty for lying to them.
So here I am, a lone Wiccan who, while I am learning more and more, feel like I don’t know anything. I assure anyone reading this that I’m completely earnest in my Wiccan faith. That’s why I’ve started blogging.
I chose Angelica Greenwitch as my “magic” name. I am “Angelica” after Angelica Huston, my favorite actress (not just because she played an incredible Morticia Addams, either). “Greenwitch” isn’t because I want to be all eco-friendly and crunchy-granola (nothing wrong with that). Green refers to new and inexperienced. Witch refers to my Wiccan faith. Hence, I am Angelica Greenwitch.
I have told a small world that I am a witch. Maybe, one day, when the timing isn’t what-do-you-want-your-brother-is-coughing-up-his-brains, I’ll be able to tell the whole world. But until then,
Brothers and Sisters!
Blessed Be!
