Is it OK to Cast During the New Moon and Dark Moon Phases? |

Do you see a Bad Moon Rising? There are a lot of misconceptions about Magick performed during the “Dark Moon” or New Moon Magick. Lately I’ve seen a number of posts recommending that practitioners refrain from casting during the New Moon, sometimes even calling such spells “dark” (whatever that means – as you move through these courses, you will learn that we do not see things in “black” and “white”). The Moon is the astronomical body closest to us and, therefore, she has a profound influence upon us. The Moon is also the most important heavenly body to Witches since we often imagine drawing on her power; she inspires and illuminates us for lunar magic. We cast our spells in accord with her cycles. As the Wheel of the Moon continues on its never-ending course, traversing the various astrological signs, she influences us in fluctuating ways. Almost everyone, from the newest newbie to the most adept adept, will agree that the highest energy occurs at the Full Moon and is, therefore, the most powerful time for magical workings. What is often argued, unfortunately, is that The New Moon is the lowest energy point in the cycle. However, the New Moon is - not the weakest point – but the second most powerful phase of the lunar cycle for Magic. The point is to know what kind of Magick to perform during the appropriate lunar phase. * New Moon Magic * New Moon workings can be done on the 2-3 days of the New Moon. The New Moon’s energy is good for starting new ventures, new beginnings, it is also appropriate to do “destructive” Magick: breaking habits, ending toxic relationships, eliminating debt, removing obstacles. This is also a great time for skrying; the darkness allows us to control the level of light surrounding our divination tools. * Dark Moon Magic * From ten-and-a-half to fourteen days after the full moon (or the “dark” days surrounding the New Moon), the dark moon’s energy is suited to ridding oneself of bad habits, binding spells, spells for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our angers and passions. This lunar energy also works for bringing justice to bear. * Waxing Moon Magic * From seven to fourteen days after the New Moon. The Waxing Moon is for constructive magic, building things, strengthening things. The Waxing Moon is about building energy. * Full Moon Magic * From fourteen to seventeen-and-a-half days after the New Moon. Prime time for rituals for prophecy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healing for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. This is also the best time to give thanks for things that have come to fruition. * Waning Moon Magic * From three-and-a-half to ten-and-a-half days after the full moon. The waning moon is used for banishing magick, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. The Waning Moon is about removing energy.
