White Magick / Black Magick

By PhoenixMorningStar 2009-09-25 23:27:29
The subject of Black witches / White witches, black magick / white magick seems to be popping up on the board a lot as of late.

I wanted to take a second especially for those of you new to the Craft and explain some things. You may, as always, take this advise with a grain of sand and research the subject for yourselves. That is the true way of Wicca.

You have to keep something in mind; black / white, good / evil, right / wrong, are all subjective terms. In many cases all the ideals of these opposites serve to do is place limitations on people and things. What may be considered “evil” to people in one culture may quite possibly be completely acceptable in another.

I was told a story by my teacher one time. I will repeat it here for you. I used to see things as either white or black with no gray areas at all. My mentor said this:

‘There was a man. He broke into a pharmacy in the middle of the night and stole drugs. He stole them! He took what did not belong to him and got away. What do you think of that?’

I answered “He stole. He took what did not belong to him. It was wrong and he should be arrested for it’

“Ah,’ she replied, ‘Here’s what you don’t know. The man had a son who was suffering from a painful and possibly terminal illness. The boy had to have the drugs or he would die. The man had gotten laid off from his job and had no money. He had went to every agency available to him in order to try to get help with obtaining the medication. No one would help. He took the drugs. He stole them...to save his son’s life. Now do you think the man was bad or evil?’

I had to admit that I could not fault the man for doing what he did to save his son. You see? Perception is what dons something good or bad in a lot of cases. Many countries have traditions and cultural practices that we, as Americans, think to be immoral or wrong. In Russia and the Ukrane it is perfectly acceptable for women as young as 15 to marry men much older. Why? Because of the history of those countries. Older men mean stability and security. Yet we do not think of it that way because of the prosperity that we enjoy.

Likewise, magick is really neither black or white. Magick is power and in that form it is neither good or evil. It is neutral. Certainly there are people who misuse that power or use it in what we consider negative ways. But let’s consider something for just a moment. If you’ve been doing this for any amount of time, you’ve probably performed a Banishing Spell of some kind. It may have been as simple as to banish a bad habit. Think for a moment. Banishing anything whether an energy or an entity is to take control of that energy or entity’s will. That is considered negative and karma will return anything negative to you three times. That is The Law. Yet even the “whitest” witch has done this. Does that mean we practice “Black Magick”? Only if you look at it in extremes.

Don’t get me wrong. There are people out there that use powers in a negative way. But we must remember to look at things from a neutral perspective. If we don’t judgement comes into play. And haven’t we as Wiccans been judged enough over the past 600 years? Of course we have.

This is not Charmed. We are not in a battle with demons. No such thing. This isn't Harry Potter. Sorry no dark Sorcerers out there. Just us
