Okay guys here’s the first instalment of many involving my reading and debunking of Dewitched by Tim Baker.
First a few minor things so this can be as effective/informed as possible. I want you my brothers and sisters to help me. As I write these blogs (1 every 2 or 3 days I hope for the first read) I want all of you to send me feedback/opinions/feelings/advice whatever it is you want to say to me in regards, please send all of this to my inbox here on Wiccanspace and be sure to specify which instalment you are talking about so I can go back and figure out what you’re talking about.
Another brief thing I’d like to cover before I get started is this is my first read through so I am not being very subjective or unbiased. I am fuelled by emotions I feel as I read this. In later read throughs, things will be added and taken away and changed and my opinions will become more unbiased less emotional and less likely to be snarky. Also because it is my first read through a lot of it will be questions. I feel you must walk into a debate considering all possible questions that could come up and they can be answered later. I will be researching and getting references as time goes on but seeing as this is my first read of the book and I want to catalogue the whole process so I can look back at it this read will mostly be identifying questions and the second will probably create more questions. That I will answer or you lovely people will answer as my project continues.
Oh one last thing if you send me something and I use it I will site you in the final draft where the citation is needed. I would prefer real names but if you are uncomfortable with that then I will use your screen name.
Here’s how it will work. I will quote an excerpt from the book that I feel needs to be discussed or dealt with right off the bat. Unfortunately this first instalment being based not on “facts” he presents but on his personal feelings and beliefs will be mostly my own feelings and beliefs and the questioning of his.
This blog will cover the first read of the Introduction. In the introduction the author has chosen to tell a story of a childhood friend who he discovered Christ with but then later lost touch with.
Later he is informed that Ron (his friend from childhood) has fallen on hard times and is living out of his car.
1:1 “Our (mutual) friend told me Ron had been independent on alcohol and was a practicing Wiccan. It was one of the most depressing tales I’ve ever heard” - Baker, Tim, April 2004, Dewitched, Introduction pg. X
This is more being dealt with because it infuriated me. Many people all over the world fall on hard times and many people stumble upon religion because of these hard times but many people also find religion in times of good. Is it not possible that Wicca was neither the cause nor the effect of his ill-fated cards? Instead is it possible it was nothing more than coincidence?
Later he is reunited with his long lost childhood friend and they meet for coffee.
1:2 “Despite our obvious differences -- he had a pentagram tattooed on one hand and a dragon . . . On his arm -- our friendship was stronger than I expected.” Baker, Tim, April 2004, Dewitched, Introduction pg. X
Here what I would like to know is, is it the tattoo or what the tattoo is that bothers him so? If the tattoos were a cross and a lamb would it offend him? Also here I feel the need to point out the fact that most Wicca’s refer to them as Pentacles not Pentagrams.
1:3 “I would never have sat and talked to a Wiccan I didn’t know . . .” Baker, Tim, April 2004, Dewitched, Introduction pg. X, XI
You were friends before he became a Wiccan would that honestly get in your way? Had he been Muslim or Fat or Gay would it have made a difference? (excuse the terrible political correctness) Is it fear of the different of fear of that which you cannot even begin to understand?
1:4 “I don’t care about the pentagram or the dragon. Years ago, you stood faithful to Christ in a time I did not. Now it’s my turn.” Baker, Tim, April 2004, Dewitched, Introduction pg. XI
You claim to not care about differences yet not a paragraph ago you said you would not usually sit with a Wiccan. That to me seems like you very much so care about the difference in belief. Why bring it up in the first place.
1:5 “I hope that you will see that you need rescuing. . . . And I pray that you will see the amazing arms of Jesus wrapped around you.” Baker, Tim, April 2004, Dewitched, Introduction pg. XI
What Pray tell does he need rescuing from? A very peaceful faith, with a less bloody history than Christianity. (whoever has the 13 rules of Wicca could you send it to me I’d like to use it) Here I will cite the main foundation of Wicca that we all try to abide by, as well as examples of violence in the Christian History including the way they treated “Witches“.
That’s all for today in 2 or 3 days I’ll cover the preface. Please send comments to my inbox I appreciate any and all help and resources. |
