How did you all go about getting alter tools?
Posted by istasis326 on 2010-02-17 14:53:09
There seem to be no good stores in CT to buy tools. I just ordered some from the internet and they are absoulte junk, I have to return everything! So, anyone care to tell me how they went about collecting everything? And what are the basics, I have read so many different alter setups. I am so confused!

oh darling istasis!
you should ask how does everybody have their altars set up....because EVERYBODY has a different way of setting up their altar.

i make most of my tools n stuff i need. for example i've made my wand, my altar cloth (cuz the table is ugly lmao!) and i hit dollar stores!!! i found the most amazing candle holders the other day at the dollar store...all the same. only in blue, yellow, black, and like a browny red. (the elements!) but they can hold tealites, votives, AND tapers! a buck a piece :)

my chalice is an old wine glass my grama left to me. i dont use an athame (my wand is the substitute, because i dont like the manmade aspect of the athame, if i could make it myself i totally would. but im a green witch lol)

i've also got representations of the lord an lady on mine. i use 2 big white candles with the triple moon carved in one for Her, and the horned symbol for Him. i have my inscence (i hate spelling that word!!!) in front of them and i've got my element candles/candle holders facing their appropriate directions etc etc.

honestly dont worry about accumulating them all at once...it took me years to find stuff i really liked an that worked for me. but seriously? you can do magic and have an altar with just your finger and your brain. (tools are just fun and serve the purpose of focusing your intent) lol

internet stuff stinks unless you pay up the arse for it! an even then sometimes it stinks!

good luck! an u can use anything as long as you consecrate and put your energy into it :) but making your own stuff is putting a lot of your energy into the things, and i've always had better luck with that kinda deal.

I was planning on making my own tools, but I am not very "crafty". My husband is, so I will have him teach me (not do it himself-I know that does not count) The stuff I ordered was the cheapest stuff I have ever seen! And now they are writing me nasty emails about WHY I want to return the stuff. I was so sweet about it, now I am wondering WHY I was so sweet. I think the alter you have is almost EXACTLY the same as the one I imagined having. I have a few things already. I have a huge beautiful wine glass my husband bought for me that is to big for daily use, (plus I no longer drink) a broom my mother gave me that smells like cinnamon (my favorite scent ever!) and a mermaid (also my favorite mythical creature) incense burner. I have a dollar store right down the street, I never thought of that! Thanks Almost-your the bomb baby!

and may I make a correction, a mermaid is not so much a mythical creature.....not really sure what they are! I just know if I could be anything, I would be a mermaid and live happily underwater for all eternity. No, I'm not crazy, just think different than others! LOL (stop laughing or cursing Almost, I know you are!)

Hello Istasis, I agree with Almost Witchy. You can find great things at dollar stores. I love dollar stores. My daughter says I'm so cheap.LOL And you can try flea markets. As for the altar clothes, I go to Walmart and in the fabric department I just get the fabric thats been already cut. Its cheaper.I do have a couple of internet places I use. The two main ones are www.azuregreen.com and www.wisdom.com. Wisdom also goes under indioproducts.com. I hope this helps.

All these posts help, thank you all so much! See now this site is back to what it was meant to be. And yes Almost, I would love for those Japanese's ship to sink! (but leave them alive but injured-lol)

The few things that I have sort of jumped out at me. Most of them I already had and were waiting for me to come around I think.

I have some things around the house, but my want, athame, and robe are what is bothering me the most. Especially the first two!

I meant WAND-sorry!

About the Athame problem. I actually recently started an online store. www.ravensweb13.net and I actually recommend doing what Raymond Buckland said in his "Complete Book of Witchcraft. Get a cheap athame and either make or inscribe on the handle so it feels like your own. You can make a robe cheap and easy, if you check the dollar Walmart bin's for material every once and a while.. Try to stay a way from synthetics like polyester though because they light on fire really easy. P.S. if anyone needs anything thats not on my store..let me know and I will tell you what I can get it for and if I can give a bigger discount..

I bought most of my things off Ebay and had no issues with any of them.

I also bought some things(candles and incense mostly)from a place called The Wiccan Way. Here is the link...

Wiccan way is the best! I have been buying things from them for years. Especially candles. But never needed alter tools until now. But thank you!

hey well mine is simple...
Earth is a simple bowl of salt
Water a bowl of water
Air is a great incesce stick holder
Fire is just a little votive
I've got statues from Italy for the Goddess and the God
All of my tools are next to my main
See, some people have enough room for a high and a low altar but I'm just a lowly 16 year old living with his parents so it'll have to wait...
Like everyone else is saying as long as your efforts are heartfelt, you just gotta work with what you got! ;)
