Craft Names

First, I'd like to thank those that replied to my last post on a misguided friend. It's nice to feel that I've got like-minded people who are there with advice for life's little speed bumps. So sincerely, thank you all. As for my question at hand, this seems to be an issue for many as I've seen it crop up in discussion often. I've had a hard time for what seems like months and months on the issue of how should one go about obtaining their craft name. Raymond Buckland in "Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft" (Big Blue) indicates that one's craft name should equate to their birth number as discovered through a numerology grid numbered 1-9. However, any given search on-line will produce a different numerological lay out or a new method all together. Not to mention that Buckland was a Garderian Witch to say nothing of say a follower of Seax-Wica, or Faery Wicca. Needless to say, there's far too many questions to ask here. Then, in "Everyday Witch A to Z" by Deborah Blake (My favorite Wiccan author) she says her craft name (Onyx) was just given to her naturally by a friend. No mention of numerology at all. So in the end, does birth number even factor in and is it better or even appropriate to give yourself a craft name or wait around until someone gives you one? Here's to being completely confused and eagerly waiting your input. Thanks again all. Bright Blessings.

there are MANY MANY ways to get your craft name. you CAN use numerology. but you dont have to. you dont have to wait for somebody to give it to you. you can name yourself. you can ask the divine. but there's no one way you HAVE to get your name.

I fully agree with "Almost" you do not have to wait for someone to give you a name or do it by numerology. What makes sense to you? I'm not sure if you meditate, but if you do try meditating on it. what comes to you? ever witch is different and comes to results differently. Its not so much how you get the name its more what it is and what it says about you. How you feel about it. the choice is yours. The choices are always yours.
Good luck and blessed be.

and I agree both both of the above posts. I used numerology by Buckland, but that was my choice. I had a name in mind already however, and it turns out just adding a few numbers Bucklands way gave me the name Istasis, when the name that popped out at me was Isis (I was thinking of my BF dog at the time, now realizing Isis was a god-opps!)But I am glad I have my name, it suits me. Do whats in your heart, only you can decide.

Same here! I researched and found a name that suits me. My birth name initials are AL so it was important to me that I kept my second name those initials. Then, I made sure to find names that meant what I liked and sounded sweet to my ear. After I meditated on it, I mixed some pieces together and BAM! There it was! (BTW: The name is Azariel Lavan. It sort of says "One who uses the waters of the holy to heal.") :)
