| i was wondering if it was necessary to cast a circle every time you perform a spell? Is it a requirement or not? |

| Actually, that depends entirely on the nature of the spell. Myself, I created a permanent protective circle and embedded its energies in a pendant that I wear about my neck. One a week I recharge these energies. Then, when I need a protective circle cast, I link to the energies in the pendant and it is just there. A bit of a time-saver if you need an elemental boost right before you do a major job interview. It has always worked for me. |

No, it's not.
A spell is typically a magical act affected through a direct attempt to alter an experience of reality, while a ritual seeks to manufacture a reality. The first occurs in the perceptual reality of the caster through the activities involved in weaving the spell. The second requires that a space be "set apart" so that it can be "cleansed" (made neutral), and consecrated (grant potential), so that an experience may be manufactured through ritual expression.
Spells do not "require" a circle - in fact, the only thing they do require is Understanding and Awareness.
Rituals require a circle to establish the control or seed perception.
Does that help?

depending on what you're working with circles are a wise idea for protection as well. As already mentioned, usually during ritual.
