What do you feel makes one Pagan? Is it self-identification with the term?

Greetings everyone!
I was wondering if anyone here would mind sharing what they feel makes
someone Pagan. Personally, I feel that self-identification with the term
is enough to make someone Pagan. There is no secret handshake, all that
matters is that you are doing what feels right to you.
It hasn't really been that long since I became "officially" Pagan - only a little over a year. However, since then I have researched and read up on various Pagan religions including Wicca, Druidism, and Asatru - before deciding the Eclectic path was for me.
I do have some Wiccan leanings however - I see Deity as the Horned God and Mother Goddess, though I believe Deity appears differently to every person, in whatever way is best for them. I don't believe my way is the only way, just the way that works for me. I also believe in a form of karma (the Rule of Three) and reincarnation. I believe that we have a lesson to learn in each lifetime, and that we rest in between in the Summerland, or Heaven, or whatever you see the Afterlife as. I am quite Nature-based, though I didn't used to be. Unlike some, I don't believe being Earth-based is completely fundemental to being Pagan - there are many Asatru and Reconstructionists who don't see themselves as Earth-based at all.
I practice my spirituality through celebrating the changing seasons and the cycles of the moon - either through ritual or through simply observing them and noticing the beauty in Nature. I also see recycling to be a spiritual practice, and I make certain to never litter.
Being Pagan is what has made me happiest in life - it feels right in a way nothing else ever could. I'm very happy to be accepted into the Pagan community - I really do love that everyone is so accepting and welcoming!
What do you feel makes someone Pagan? For me, I believe it is a case of self-identification. I self-identify myself as Pagan - and the term feels right for me - and that is all that is needed. Does that make sense to you? I am Pagan because I identify with the term, and that is all that matters.
I simply feel a strong resonation with the word, and I feel it is the right term to label my beliefs. I don't believe I need to do anything to be Pagan (that's not to say I don't do anything), I believe it is a part of me - and that no matter what I will always be Pagan. This is a strong belief of mine - being Pagan is the thing that has made me happiest in life, and I don't believe I have to meditate, do ritual, be connection to Nature or the God and Goddess to be Pagan. I believe those things help, and I do do them currently, though I don't believe they are utterly fundemental to being Pagan.
Does this make any sense lol? Sorry if it seems like a jumble of random thoughts! I think what I am trying to say is this: I am Pagan - because of my self-identification with the term - and proud of it. I hope that others can accept me as a Pagan also, as I accept them, and see that I am genuine in my desire to grow spiritually and be accepted into the community. I am really just writing this to see if others here agree with me and will accept as a Pagan for who I am.I thank you all for reading this and for accepting me as a fellow Pagan :)
Does this make sense to any Pagans here? Anyone agree with me? |
