Question about Satan
Posted by autumnriley78 on 2010-09-20 10:08:27
I was under the impression that Satan was something the Christians made up about the pagan's God in order to scare people away from Paganism. Is this true? Also, is it true that the God is bad and the Goddess is good?
Thank you, and sorry if these are stupid or ignorant questions. just trying to learn all I can

depends on which religion you look thru. if you are an extreme feminist then maybe u wont be so fond of the god, but i believe you are correct on the whole "satan" thing.

Well which religion is right? Why wouldn't I like the God? What did he do?

I don't just want to pick a religion that sounds good to me I want to pick the one that is right.

I was born and raised in the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses, got out of it when i was 26 and am now Agnostic. But Wicca has always interested me. I've read a book named To Fly a Broomstick but it went into such detail about the holidays I kind of lost interest.

Regarding Satan-
Satan is a Christian idea. Wiccans don't believe in Satan as an entity.

Regarding the God and Goddess-
Although there's polarity between the God and Goddess neither is "good" and neither is "evil". I find issue with the Goddess and God being viewed as ever loving all good doing deities.
After all, we have death and disaster. I like to think that everything they do is for a reason- to sustain life.

The God is the Goddess' lover and her partner. They are equals. She is represented by the moon, silver, and motherly/feminine aspects. He is represented by the Sun, gold, and fatherly/masculine aspects.

Sorry, This site doesn't have an edit button so I have to make a new post.

The way you view the lord and lady depends mostly on your experience with them and your relationship with them. So I can't tell you if you'll "Like" the God or the Goddess. I suggest reading up about them and maybe doing a meditation or astral travel to meet them and start a relationship. Prayer works as well.

Also, if you found yourself losing interest in details about the Sabbats (Holidays) you may not be ready to be a Wiccan. Although the holidays aren't the most important thing, they certainly are not the least important. There's a lot of information and experimentation in Wicca and a lot of details that you'll need to read and learn.

I agree about the Lord and Lady part above.
I have certainly read that the image for "Satan" was taken from the Pagan "Horned God" The horned god would be Cernousnous (spelling varies). He is the Lord of animals and all things wild. Also stolen was the image of Baphomet, an Egyptian God and even "Pan", a Greek/Roman God of music and frivolity.
The Christians, back in the day, were interested in scaring (and scarring) people. They managed to do a real good job of it.
Satan of course, was a fallen angel. He was never a god and I don't understand why he's is evened considered the polar opposite to god.
Any religion can be bad if people use it the wrong way.
I feel that whether you believe in God and Goddess or only one or the other, is your own personal choice. If you can find a Patron God and Matron Goddess that work well for you.
I work with many, depending on my ritual. My favorite is Aphrodite, whom I love to invoke.
You just have to find out what or whom works best for you. BB

Satan extends beyond just Christianity. He is present in many religions. And his absense is noted in more religions than just ours.

Personally, I don't beleieve the God and Goddess exist as anything more than figures.

Most, if not all religions, have common aspects with another.

Satan and the all knowing single god are common ones, present in more than just Christianity. Many religions have virgin births. And, each religion has violence in it's past caused by followers. Even us. We have had wiccan extremists. I learned about them in my Encyclopedia of Magick.

As for being good or evil, more than likely both. Where there is light, there will always be dark. And vice versa. Nothing is perfect, not even the god and goddess, I imagine.

I'm glad you asked! I find religion of all sorts interesting. Sociologically, it's an EXTREMELY powerful tool.

you want to pick the religion that is "right"

..............the fawk?

no religion is "right". no religion is "wrong" either.

ALL religion, is opinion. all of it. because, NOBODY knows for sure, 100% what happens when you die, if there really is a "god" if there is a "hell" or if there is somebody up there punishing you for doing wrong. nobody knows for 100% sure. what exists. what is "real" because "real" is purely subjective. nobody experiences the same thing the same as anybody else. and we'll never know if THAT is 100% true or not. because nobody lives anybody elses life, or through their brains, or through their senses.

so, you shouldnt ask yourslf what religion is "right" you should ask yourself what your belief system is. you shouldnt mold them to fit specific guidelines of a religion. you should have your own belief system, and if those beliefs happen to coincide with those of a specific religion, wickedshit. go nuts.

Thank you, LunaSelene! Great information! Well, I lost interest in the Holidays because I'm not going to celebrate anything I don't understand. I want to get to know the Goddess and God first before I celebrate anything. Idk if that makes sense but I just don't think my whole heart will be in it if I don't understand it completely.

Alura, I read that too about the image of Satan. So the horned image they took it from was Cernousnous, and he's not the God? What is the name of the God and the Goddess?

"Satan of course, was a fallen angel. He was never a god and I don't understand why he's is evened considered the polar opposite to god."
Wow you're right! I never even thought of this!

"I find religion of all sorts interesting. Sociologically, it's an EXTREMELY powerful tool."
I couldn't agree more!

AlmostWitch137, well idk that's just what I feel... I really believe Christianity and Islam (those are the only two I have a good knowledge of so they're the only two I'm going to mention) are just wrong in all their thinking! I do not believe their gods exist so to me, they would be the wrong religion.

But I guess you're right when you say "ALL religion, is opinion. all of it. because, NOBODY knows for sure, 100% what happens when you die".
But when Wiccans evoke certain Gods and Goddess' and and those Gods and Goddess' actually COME to them and speak to them, doesn't that prove that they exist? Although I've heard a lot of Christians say they've talked to Jesus, so honestly, it's all very confusing.

I really don't know what my belief system is, I just know I don't like religions that put women in subjection or teaches that women are any lesser than men. That's what I grew up with and what I despise.

Maybe that's not such a big thing to other people but it is to me, so maybe that is my starting off point in actually finding a good spiritual path.

in wicca there is no satan. and the gods r not bad or evil, its more like how they choose to be, just like us we can do things to better our suroundings and we could do things to make it worse. Right?

You wanna get closer to the truth, look for the origin of every single religion you know. Involving the pagan or abrahamic (christianity, islam, judaism) religions you'll see their stories are all very connected regardless of their dislike of one another and go back further into the ancient pagan texts of Sumeria/Babylon/Mesopotamian region. Look up the Epic of Gilgamesh, this was the original story of the great flood of Noah found in Sumeria which later influenced the story of Noah and the myth of the flood in Greek Mythology. Research all things Mesopotamian. Sumeria is the core of what became the beliefs of today.

I read about the mythology of the Babylonians. I have no interest in mythology.
