Black VS. White

(DISCLAIMER: the opinions stated in the following do not reflect or represent those of wiccanspace, members of the wiccan faith, any pagan faith, or otherwise. i do not speak for everybody as a whole. these are my opinions only)

I think its about time for another "black" magic vs "white" magic discussion.

Or at least I feel its time to post my thoughts again since my last one was buried in the myriad of posts since then lol.

I feel like theres a very large emphasis on "black" magic and "white" magic, and the moral/ethical implications of "black" magic especially.

I, personally, don't think there is "black" magic and "white" magic.
To me, magic is simply a tool. It is neither black or white; good or evil. To me, magic is like a knife. A knife is not itself evil or good; it can be used for both. A murderer can wield a knife and accomplish some pretty evil deeds. But a surgeon can wield a knife (scalpel) and save somebody's life. The knife is not evil, nor is the knife good. It's purpose and outcome is dictated by the person BEHIND the knife.

Just like magic in my opinion. Magic is a tool, and has the capability to be "black" or "white" depending on the intent of the person BEHIND the magic. But its not JUST about intent: its also about perspective.

If I cast a spell, such as a binding or banishing, to keep somebody from hurting me, is that "black" magic or "white" magic ???
Well, my intent is to keep myself safe. Not to harm anybody. My perspective is that its a necessary action to preserve my well-being. That could be considered "white" magic. BUT from the other persons perspective (the person im casting on) I would be infringing on their rights and trying to control their actions; directly affecting the free will of somebody else. By most people's standards that would be considered "Black" magic.

so the question remains: if i cast a binding/banishing on somebody to keep myself safe, is it black magic or white magic?

Moral of the story is, life is not so cut and dry. Its not a case of "black" or "white" Things arent good or evil. And neither are people. People have the capacity to be either good or evil, and are often times both (depending on persepctive) Just like magic. So next time you go to cast, or call yourself a "(insert colour here) wiccan" take the time to think about how your previous and future actions could be interpreted by the people on the opposite side of the fence.

Absolutley true.

I believe that this 'white and black' magic thing is spread through misinformation. Without actually researching what magic is, people will take information frm misleading sources, IE; TV shows, Movies and the like.

In reality, it's like Almost said. Magic is magic.

It's like the expression, 'guns don't kill people, people kill people.'

The same principle applies here. If you are the type of person who is hateful and casts magic against people with mailicious intent, then you're the evil one, not your magic.

And Vice Versa.

Consider the intents behind the spell you're casting. Are they good, or harmful?

Thank you for taking the time to express your opinion on the matter of, "Black," versus, "White," magic. It is helps me get a very basic understanding of magic. Society certainly has made it appear to be an exceptionally dangerous and scary area. I would like to learn more so I can make my own decisions. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed! Very good point! Humankind is wired to believe in polarities...good/evil...probably the most common. I believe the same that it's the caster who chooses the polarity not the magic itself. I would say there is also gray magic too then-magic that falls in the in between.
In psychology you have the light self and the dark self, not to say that light means good and dark means bad. It's not that at all. You can also call it the shadow self-a darker perspective of the psyche maybe, even a darker sense of self but not necessarily evil in any way.
People's imaginations can conjure up many things. With out any help of magic, spell work or even ritual...
Love is the law, love is the bond.
To what purpose do most people do magick anyhow other than to their own purpose indeed.
Magic is not just about gaining your true love, or a certain job, or lots of money but it's to those ends, do those ends justify the means? I think not.
How many people actually do magic for world peace, to help stave off the hunger of children, or any other selfless idea.
So many people just don't get the truth of what magic can do.
I look at it this way, my magic is for the good of the Mother. If I need a favor, I just ask the Goddess. If she sees fit to help me then great! If not I understand. My work is for Her, not my or my selfish needs.
This is why I get angry at some of the kids here too-coz they don't get it.
Only a few people here get it, like everyone who's responded to this post...so far.
Blessed be!

Neutral Magic (Grey). This is where we all start out, with some exeptions of course, But choices that are made by us (as a people) are what change the Magic. Take what I write how you want to, it's up to you. But this is my opinion.

May Peace and Love fo0llow you and yours.
