Lots of people are solitary practitioners. You don't need to be initiated into a coven in order to be pagan.

You should try reading Scott Cunningham's book, "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner".

Don't worry that you are "doing it wrong." The fun with being pagan is that you get to make it up as you go along! Do what you want, just abide by the Wiccan Reede and do things for the better good. (Otherwise, things will come back to bite you in the butt! Trust me on this.) Rule of three and all that.

I'am very knew to this religion, and you sound very wise about it, so i was wondering if i could ask you a few questions, because it would help me a great deal. I know i don't have to join a coven, but let's say i want to, how would i go about this, there is no one else who i know who is wiccan and has a coven that i know about, you see i go to a catholic school, so my friends don't have the same beliefs as i do, and my parents think its devil worship, so there no one i can turn to... what should i do if i want to join a coven?

Hey Audrey! That's a great question you asked, "what should i do if i want to join a coven?"

I always tell people they should hook up with their friendly neighborhood metaphysical book store and ask if they offer any classes? I'm pretty lucky to live in an area where there are several pagan shops. They have classes all the time on subjects like protection herbs, tarot reading, Hoodoo magick, Wicca, etc.

Whenever I go to a class I always meet really cool people. My best suggestion would be to start hanging out at classes. You will meet other pagan folks and make some friends that way. Then if all goes well... perhaps you guys can do some circles together.

I think that's usually how covens get started. They're usually informal, kind of a group of friends who has been getting together to do stuff on a regular basis.

If anything, you really want to get to know someone well before you start doing circles with them. Believe me, I've gone to some "public circles" and sure 9 out of 10 people there were super cool... but you always get that one random weirdo. It throws off the energy of the whole group. Seriously, it's like making applesauce with 9 apples and 1 lemon.

Um... as for joining a coven, I can suggest going to Meetup.com and trying to find the local pagan group in your city. Again, watch out for weirdos. The meetups are always at some public place like a coffee shop so they are relatively safe. If you go to a few of them, you start to see really quickly who are the people you want to talk to and who are the people you want to stay away from. lol

So anyway, my point is: Go out there and actively seek your local pagan community. You will eventually make some friends whom you want to do circles with. Hope that helps. :)
